Emergency vets

Help at any hour in Malta and Gozo

Who to call

Go straight to a vet if you see

  • Trouble breathing
  • Straining to pee
  • Car accident or bad fall
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Poisoning (lilies, medicine)
  • Fits or collapse

Don't wait. Phone on the way so they are ready.

What to do

  • During opening hours

Call your usual vet first: many keep slots for emergencies. Don't have one? See vets by town.

  • Your cat at night or on a Sunday

Call 153, ext. 22 (free, 24/7) and they'll tell you where to go, usually the Fgura emergency clinic (8pm to 8am, and all day on Sundays and public holidays). From Gozo they arrange free transport to Malta.

  • Can't get through?

The vets' after-hours line, 5250 2000, reaches the vet on call (about €5 a call, plus after-hours fees).

  • A hurt stray

In Malta, take it to a vet or call a licensed rescue or the colony's feeder. In Gozo, call the 24/7 ambulance on 7969 1717.

Hurt stray in Malta? Try a vet or a rescue first

Most feeders take a hurt stray to a vet or a licensed rescue, so someone can follow its care. If neither is possible, call Animal Welfare on 153, ext. 17 and ask where the cat will be taken.

In Gozo, the Animal Welfare Section's 24/7 ambulance is on 7969 1717.

While you wait

  • Keep the cat in a carrier or box, somewhere quiet and dark.
  • Keep it warm with a towel, not hot.
  • Lift it in a towel, supporting its body. Hurt cats can bite.
  • No food or water, in case it needs surgery.

Clinics with night or weekend cover

Night cover changes, so always call before you set off.

Malta

At night, call 153 ext. 22 or 5250 2000 first.

Gozo

At night, on Sundays and public holidays, call 153 ext. 22. A Gozo clinic is on duty by rota, or they arrange transport to Malta.

Worth knowing

Don't rely on the old 1717 number. The Ta' Qali animal hospital hasn't reopened yet.
