Microchipping and registering your cat
A chip is the one ID a cat can't lose, but only if the record has your current details.
Is it the law in Malta?
For dogs, yes. For cats, not currently, though making it compulsory has been proposed. It's still the best way to get a lost cat home, as vets, sanctuaries and the Animal Welfare ambulance scan found animals.
Getting your cat chipped
- A vet puts it in with a quick injection between the shoulder blades, often at the same visit as neutering.
- The vet registers the chip to your name and contact details. Keep the chip number with your cat's records.
- Prices vary, so ask your vet.
Moved house or changed your number?
This is the step most people forget.
- Ask the vet who chipped your cat to update your address and phone number.
- Or contact the Animal Welfare Directorate's Microchipping Office in Marsa. The quickest route is Servizz.gov on 153.
- At the next vet visit, ask them to scan the chip and read back the details.
New owner? Transfer the chip
If you've taken on a cat that's already chipped, move the record to your name with the official Transfer of Pets service on servizz.gov.mt, for cats and dogs. Processing takes around a month.
Worth knowing
We couldn't confirm an online way to check or update chip details yourself, or which database cat chips are kept on. Your vet can tell you. If you know more, please tell us.
