Found or spotted a cat?

Thank you for stopping. Here's what to do.

Malta has many community cats, so not every cat outside is lost.

Is it hurt? That comes first

If the cat is injured, weak or in danger, take it to the nearest vet (emergency vets, day and night) or call a licensed rescue. Otherwise, call the Animal Welfare Directorate on 153, extension 17. Wrap it in a towel, as pain can make even friendly cats bite.

Is it lost, or a local community cat?

  • A friendly, confused cat after festa fireworks is likely someone's pet.
  • Probably lost: a collar, very friendly and clean, confused, cries at doors, or an unusual breed.
  • Probably a community cat: a clipped or notched ear tip (neutered, and may have a carer), part of a fed group, wary of people.
  • Leave a community cat where it is unless it's hurt or in danger. Don't chase or corner a frightened cat. Let it come to you.
  • Not sure? Check the lost cats first, then report it as spotted.
  • Want to keep it? Read keeping a found cat first.

Check for a microchip

Any vet can scan for a microchip (a tiny ID tag under the skin) in a minute. Some may charge, so ask before you go.

Report it here and share it

Keeping it safe for now

  • Keep it indoors somewhere quiet, away from your pets, with water, food and a tray (a box of soil or shredded paper).
  • Give plenty of water and cat food, never cow's milk, as it upsets their stomachs.
  • Can't keep it? Say so in your post and ask a local rescue for advice.

Handing it back safely

Ask the owner to describe something not in your photos, or show earlier ones. Meet somewhere public if you'd rather not share your address, and mark your post as reunited once it's home.

Hurt stray in Malta? Try a vet or a rescue first

Most feeders take a hurt stray to a vet or a licensed rescue, so someone can follow its care. If neither is possible, call Animal Welfare on 153, ext. 17 and ask where the cat will be taken.

In Gozo, the Animal Welfare Section's 24/7 ambulance is on 7969 1717.
